Free tools terms of service
Last updated: August 2026 · Effective: 1 August 2026
These terms govern the free tools at bankwriter.com/tools/. The free bank statement converter is not covered here; it sits under the Terms of Service.
Overview
These terms govern the free tools at bankwriter.com/tools/ (the “Tools”): the PDF editor and redaction tool including its e-signature feature, PDF merge and split, the stamp generator for Adobe Acrobat, the tax org chart builder, the CSV, QBO, OFX and QFX converters, and the OFX, QFX and QBO validator.
The free bank statement converter is not covered here. It is governed by our Terms of Service. If these terms and the Terms of Service conflict, the Terms of Service prevail for the free converter and these terms prevail for the Tools.
Before your first download or export, a Tool may ask for your name, firm and email address, and confirm the address with an emailed code. How that information is used is described in our Privacy Policy.
By using any Tool you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Tools.
01What you may do
You may use the Tools in your browser, free of charge, for your own work and for your clients' work, including commercially. No licence purchase is required and, for most Tools, no account.
The files a Tool produces are yours. You may download, keep, edit, share and include them in client deliverables without attribution to us and without owing us anything.
You may link to any tool page. You may tell clients and colleagues that you used the Tools.
That is the whole of the licence granted. Anything not permitted here is covered by section 2.
02What you may not do
- Copy, rehost or redistribute the Tools. The Tools' code is served to your browser so it can run; that is not a licence to take it. You may not copy, download for reuse, modify, reverse-engineer, rehost, resell or redistribute any part of the Tools' code, design or text, or remove their domain restrictions or copyright notices.
- Embed or frame the Tools or tool pages in another website, app or service.
- Abuse the service. No automated or scripted access, scraping, rate-limit evasion, denial-of-service, or use of the Tools to process content you have no right to process.
- Misrepresent origin. Do not present the Tools, their output styling, or the signature certificate as your own product or as affiliated with you.
03Intellectual property
The Tools, including all BankWriter code, page copy, visual design, the BankWriter name and logo, and the signature-certificate design, are the property of BankWriter and protected by copyright and trademark law. All rights reserved; no licence is granted except the right to use the Tools as described in section 1.
The Tools incorporate open-source components, which remain under their own licences. Those licences apply to those components only, not to BankWriter's code.
- pdf.js, under Apache-2.0.
- pdf-lib, fontkit, React, React Flow, ExcelJS and html2canvas, under MIT.
- The Great Vibes, Liberation Sans, Tinos and Open Sans fonts, under SIL OFL 1.1.
04E-signatures
The Sign feature creates a simple electronic signature with a timestamped audit trail and an integrity fingerprint (SHA-256) of the original document. Simple electronic signatures are legally effective for many everyday business documents in Canada, the United States and elsewhere, but three limits apply.
- Some documents, such as wills, certain land transfers and some guarantees, require other forms.
- This is not a certificate-based, PKI or qualified digital signature, and carries no certificate-authority attestation.
- Nothing on this site is legal advice.
You are responsible for confirming an electronic signature is appropriate for your document and jurisdiction, and for keeping your original files.
05Redaction
The redaction tool permanently removes covered content by flattening redacted pages into images. You are responsible for reviewing the downloaded file to confirm everything you intended to redact is gone before sharing it. Keep your original.
06No warranty; limitation of liability
The Tools are provided “as is”, free of charge, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of output.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from use of the Tools, including lost data, incorrect conversions, incomplete redactions or disputes about signed documents. Our total liability for all claims is capped at the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, and CAD 100.
07Fair use limits and changes
We may add, change, rate-limit, suspend or remove Tools, or block abusive users or hosts, at any time without notice. We may update these terms; the effective date above changes when we do, and continued use means acceptance.
08Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there. The courts of Ontario have exclusive jurisdiction, except where your local consumer law gives you the right to bring proceedings where you live.
